Home visitors are well positioned to promote literacy in the homes of the families. Some of the ways they can support and nurture family literacy skills are by modeling and encouraging literacy promoting behaviors and activities and by helping families create literacy rich homes. This training is designed to provide information and strategies that home visitors can use to help families develop a literacy rich home environment for their children. MOD012
Objectives
By the end of this training Home Visitors will be able to:
- Define literacy and understand the five key opportunities that children birth-five need in order to become successful readers and writers
- Discuss developmental milestones of early literacy development and how to select age-appropriate book
- Demonstrate knowledge of when and why parents should read to young children. Identify ways to connect, nurture, and support family literacy skills
