February is Children's Dental Health Month!

February is Children’s Dental Health Month! The American Dental Association's campaign for 2019 is “Brush and clean in between to build a healthy smile!”

The Arkansas Home Visiting Network is so excited about children’s dental health. The AHVN was recently awarded a Delta Dental Community Grant that will allow us to purchase dental kits for families across the state! The dental kits will include Healthy Baby Teeth flip charts, My Healthy Teeth! DVDs, digital parent handouts, pediatric mouth models and oversized toothbrushes, foam teeth, and children’s books to help children learn healthy dental habits.

At the AHVN we build stronger families and brighter futures for the children and communities of Arkansas every day. Our vision is that every family in our state is equipped to help its children achieve their greatest potential. We could not be more excited to provide parents and children who are enrolled in home visiting with dental kits to help them understand the importance of daily oral hygiene!

However, many children in Arkansas lack access to important dental care. Thankfully, Arkansas Children’s Hospital is also dedicated to providing dental care to every child across the state. They provide three state-of-the-art vans that are outfitted as Mobile Dental Clinics and provide comprehensive dentistry to approximately 1,200 school-aged children across Arkansas through more than 2,700 visits annually.

ACH also provides a Dental Sealant Program, which consists of a team that provides oral health education and preventative care such as dental screenings, fluoride applications, and dental sealants to children’s teeth to protect them from cavities through adulthood. The team travels across the state, sometimes collaborating with local dental providers to reach more than 60 schools and 6,000 students every year.

ACH also provides the Future Smiles Dental Clinic, which is a fixed-base school clinic at Wakefield Elementary managed by University of Arkansas Little Rock Children’s International and provides comprehensive dental care to more than 1,500 students annually in the Little Rock School District elementary schools.

Here are some links from the ADA, which include a baby teeth eruption chart and helpful hints on teething, pacifiers, and fluoride as well!
